Reading the stories in www.undergroundhistory.blogspot.co.nz reminded me to venture into Gum Gully, where many of the graves featured are located. The lanes and aisles in Gum Gully are tranquil and shady. Don’t though choose the area for a quiet stroll if there’s a howling Wellington gale, from either the north or the south – trees have been known to blow down, and the gum trees (eucalypts) are renowned for shedding great strips of bark, let along branches which come tumbling down without warning. When conditions are good though, there’s many a fascinating headstone to browse, and if you’re specially lucky you may spot one of the resident bunny population hopping around doing its own thing.
