In the South African garden there is the strangest plant. During winter it looks like dead sticks. Spring comes along and it starts sprouting some cactus like florets at the end of the seemingly dead sticks. Within a week or two it has sprouted lots of florets, and they have become large and dark red/maroon. And then, to add to the diversity, each plant sprouts one large yellow flower head. I have no idea what this plant is called – can anyone tell me? I suspect it’s a member of the aloe family.
